SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework

The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) was developed by SAMHSA "in order to decrease substance use and abuse, promote mental health, prevent mental disorders, and reduce disability, co-morbidity and relapse related to substance use/abuse and mental illness. The SPF implements a five-step process known to promote youth development, reduce risk-taking behaviors, build assets and resilience, and prevent problem behaviors across the life span. The SPF changes SAMHSA's approach to prevention, and helps move the President's vision of a Healthier US to State and community-based action."

An information brief was prepared byCarnevale Associates, LLC, in January 2005. This brief examines the five steps used to successfully implement the strategic prevention framework. View this 2-page brief (PDF format - 189KB)
