When he became President during MADD’s 25th anniversary, he set a goal of reducing alcohol related traffic deaths by 25% in three years. He reenergized MADD’s grassroots with his vision and reengaged political leaders in the fight against impaired drivers.
Helene Nelson,
Secretary, Department of Health and Family Services
Tuesday, 12:30pm - Luncheon Comments - In 2003, Governor Jim Doyle appointed Helene Nelson to lead the Department of Health and Family Services, one of the largest and most diverse state agencies in Wisconsin. The Department promotes the health and safety of the people of Wisconsin with an array of public health, health care, and social services. Governor Doyle relies on her to help implement his “KidsFirst” initiative, maintain the health care safety net, and develop ways to make health care more affordable. Secretary Nelson is a seasoned public sector executive. She has served under five governors in various leadership capacities, including Deputy Secretary of the department she now leads. In addition, she worked for nine years in Dane County government, including four years as Director of Human Services. Secretary Nelson constantly draws on her county experience to foster improved working relationships between the state and local government. She is also a co-founder of the Center for Patient Partnerships at the U.W. Madison, which promotes health care that is more patient centered. Secretary Nelson is a graduate of Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. She and her husband, Jim Arts, reside in Madison.

Tuesday, 12:30pm - Judy Cushing: "Reducing Underage Drinking: A Collective Responsibility." This report was a turning point in the prevention of underage drinking. Judy Cushing, a member of the 12-person panel of medical, legal, and prevention professionals appointed by the National Academies of Science, Institute of Medicine, will discuss the report’s recommendations and its roadmap for action.

Wednesday, 12:30pm - Jesse Brown "Passion + Power = Prevention." Jesse Brown blends passion and power in his prevention work in Philadelphia. Working with community groups, churches and political groups he was able to stop the test marketing of Uptown cigarettes youth and stop G. Heileman’s from marketing of Power Master malt liquor to Philadelphia’s African American Youth. In 2004, he led the successful effort to ban alcohol advertising from all city owned property including bus shelters. Brown will describe how he harnessed the passion of local activists and the power of elected leaders to effect community change.
