Tools to Build a Prevention Framework

Breakout Session Workshop Descriptions

SESSION 4 - Wednesday, 9:30am-10:50am

4a - Meth:  Wisconsin Fights Back!
Gail Peavey, Agent in Charge; Cindy Giese, Wisconsin Department of Justice; and Bradley Jahr, M.S., CADCIII, Behavioral Health Program Manager, Barron County Department of Health and Human Services
Learn how Wisconsin is fighting back at the local level by supporting families in recovery, educating all ages about the dangers posed by methamphetamine, and caring for drug-affected children.

Shel Gross photo4b - Preventing Youth Suicide
Shel Gross, Milwaukee Mental Health Association; Susan Opheim, President, Helping Others Prevent & Educate about Suicide (HOPES); and Marian Sheridan, R.N., Coordinator of Health and Safety, Fond du Lac School District TeenScreen Program Director
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people in Wisconsin. But suicide is a preventable tragedy.  This workshop will provide an overview of youth suicide as well as concrete examples of how schools and communities can work together to prevent suicides.

4c - Building Assets–Reducing Risks (BARR)
Angela Jerabek, Central CAPT
The "Building Assets–Reducing Risks" program is a prevention program targeted at 9th grade students. Ninth Grade is a “make it or break it” year for many students — especially in high schools. The development of this program — created in response toward acceptance of academic failure, increased substance use and an increase in truancy — was guided by the framework of asset development and risk-protective factors.

4d - Project Northland: A Local Success Story
Genevieve Kirchman, Cooperative Educational Service Agency #5; Carol J. Roth, Starfish Consulting
Hear about the lessons learned from a three year project that implemented a middle school curriculum, Project Northland, in six school districts with some pretty significant results. This was a collaborative project between the schools districts, CESA 5, the county coalition and an external evaluator. Even if you are not currently using or plan to use this curriculum, you will find the interactive discussion valuable.
