Underage Drinking: A Major Public Health Challenge

Apart from being illegal, underage drinking poses a high risk to both the individual and society. For example, the rate of alcohol-related traffic crashes is greater for drivers ages 16 to 20 than for drivers age 21 and older. Adolescents also are vulnerable to alcohol-induced brain damage, which could contribute to poor performance at school or work. In addition, youthful drinking is associated with an increased likelihood of developing alcohol abuse or dependence later in life. Early intervention is essential to prevent the development of serious alcohol problems among youth between the ages of 12 and 20. This Alcohol Alert describes some of the most harmful consequences of underage drinking as well as prevention and treatment approaches that can be applied successfully to meet the unique needs of this age group. NIAAA, 2003, 4pp.

Underage Drinking Prevention Action Guide and Planner

This Action Guide is designed as a monthly planner that can be used as personal calendar or to schedule and track alcohol abuse prevention activities. For each month a theme or issue is suggested and a call to action provides ideas for activities appropriate for that month's theme. A few of the themes are alcohol and family life, alcohol and popular culture and alcohol and the college experience. Activities are suggested for communities, businesses, social events, media, parents and youth. Also included for each month are facts about alcohol abuse that can be incorporated into speeches, letters, brochures, or public service announcements. To support the activities suggested in the monthly planner, the Action Guide includes information on liquor laws, factors that affect underage drinking, raising public awareness about underage drinking issues, and creating effective community networks. Sample letters, press releases, speeches, and other materials that can be easily adapted to meet local needs are provided as well. CSAP, 2001, 60pp.
