Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) Curriculum

The gathering of Native Americans (GONA) Curriculum is intended to provide culturally specific substance abuse prevention training in Native American communities. Originally implemented in 1992, the curriculum has been condensed and made more conducive to use on a local level. It is an important tool to use in providing structure to community gatherings addressing the effects of alcohol and substance abuse. GONA has four major themes, relating to the four levels of life's teachings. They are: (1) Belonging - a time when infants and children learn who they are, where they belong and a sense of protection; (2) Mastery - a time when adolescents and young adults learn to understand their gifts, their vision, where they come from, and how to master their talents; (3) Interdependence - a time for adulthood, responsibility to others, and an interconnectedness with all things; and (4) Generosity - a time when a person learns to give back to their family and community through sharing wisdom, teachings, culture, rituals, stories, and songs. CSAP, 2000, 64pp.

The Genetics of Alcoholism

Research has shown conclusively that familial transmission of alcoholism risk is at least in part genetic and not just the result of family environment. The task of current science is to identify what a person inherits that increases vulnerability to alcoholism and how inherited factors interact with the environment to cause disease. This information will provide the basis for identifying people at risk and for developing behavioral and pharmacologic approaches to pre-vent and treat alcohol problems. The advances being made now are built on the discovery 50 years ago of the role in inheritance of DNA, the genetic material in cells that serves as a blue-print for the proteins that direct life processes. Alcoholism research, like other fields, is capitalizing on the scientific spinoffs of this milestone, among them the Human Genome Project and related efforts to sequence the genomes, the complete DNA sequences, of selected animals. Graduated Driver Licensing & Drinking Among Young Drivers: NSDUH Report

States vary in the extent to which they restrict driving behavior among young drivers. This report identifies the States categorized from most restrictive to least restrictive according to the 4 category rating scheme developed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Traffic Injury Research Foundation. During the combined years of 1999 to 2001, 21% of young drivers aged 15 to 17 were binge drinkers and 6% were heavy drinkers. Young drivers aged 15 to 17 in States with the most restrictive driver licensing laws had lower rates of heavy drinking than those in States with the least restrictive laws. Young drivers aged 15 to 17 in States with more restrictive driver licensing laws had lower rates of driving under the influence of alcohol than those in States with less restrictive laws. This NSDUH Report is based on SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), formerly called the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). The NHSDA is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older. SAMHSA, 2004, 3pp.
