"New" iconBinge Alcohol Use among Persons Aged 12 to 20: 2002 and 2003 Update - NSDUH Report

Research has shown that persons who engage in binge alcohol use as teenagers are at increased risk for binge drinking as young adults.1 The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) asks respondents aged 12 or older to report their frequency and quantity of alcohol use during the month before the survey. NSDUH defines binge alcohol use as drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion (i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other) on at least 1 day in the past 30 days. All findings presented in this report are annual averages based on combined 2002 and 2003 NSDUH data. SAMHSA, 2005, 3pp.

Bridging the Gap between Research and Practice in Community-Based Substance Abuse Prevention -- Journal of Community Psychology

Despite the apparent widespread acceptance of community-focused substance abuse prevention, there is still a large gap between the research based knowledge and the actual practice of community-based prevention. In this special issue of the Journal of Community Psychology, the collection of articles highlight different community-focused prevention questions, and address many related concepts, issues, and questions. Journal of Community Psychology, 2000, 116pp.

"New" iconBrief Interventions

Unlike traditional alcoholism treatment, which focuses on helping people who are dependent on alcohol, brief interventions—or short, one-on-one counseling sessions—are ideally suited for people who drink in ways that are harmful or abusive. Unlike traditional alcoholism treatment, which lasts many weeks or months, brief interventions can be given in a matter of minutes, and they require minimal followup. The Alcohol Alert provides information on screening, administering the intervention, and putting research into action. NIAAA, 2005, 8pp.
