In Wisconsin, The School Readiness Project is underway in Watertown, Merrill, W.Allis/W.Milwaukee, Menominee County/Nation,Trevor, Platteville, Sparta, Necedah, Madison, and Gillett. This project is connected to the National Children, Youth and Families At Risk (CYFAR) Iniative. The School Readiness Project was developed as a joint project of the UW-Extension and the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kurtz, P. David, et al. "Maltreatment and the School-Aged Child: School Performance Consequences." Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal, v17 n5 p581-89 Sep-Oct 1993.

This study evaluated the school performance of school- age children and teens, comparing those who had suffered physical abused and those who had experienced neglect. The abused children displayed pervasive and severe academic and socioemotional problems. Not surprisingly, neglected children displayed academic delays. However, both groups of maltreated children showed unexpected strengths on measures of adaptive behavior.

 
Feldman, M. A. "Insufficient resources and support services Preventing Child Neglect: Child-Care Training for Parents with Intellectual Disabilities." Infants and Young Children, 11(2):1-11; October 1998.

This article describes an empirically validated assessment and training model designed to improve the parenting skills of parents with intellectual disabilities. The parent education approach is based on helping these parents to gain parenting skills. This publication includes a case study, information on assessment and intervention, staff qualifications, planning, skills and instructional methods. Evaluations found that in-home, skill-focused parent training can reduce the risk of child neglect.
